Physical Education

Physical Education

Physical Education at The Angmering School aims to inspire all students to enjoy and engage in lifelong physical activity, supporting their health, wellbeing and personal development. Our vision is to provide a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum where every learner can experience success, challenge and enjoyment. We take a holistic approach, developing students physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively through sport, with a focus on confidence, resilience, teamwork and wellbeing alongside practical and theoretical learning.

PE promotes the school values of Ambition, Respect and Courage by encouraging students to strive for personal bests, work well with others and take on new challenges both in performance and leadership. These values underpin all learning experiences within the subject.

The curriculum plays a key role in wider education and personal development, helping students build essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, decision-making and problem-solving. Students are supported to understand the importance of physical activity for lifelong health and wellbeing, while also gaining clear pathways into further study and careers in sport, health, fitness and related industries.

We ensure students develop core knowledge of rules, tactics, training principles and health, alongside skills in physical performance, leadership, analysis and evaluation. Cultural capital is built through exposure to a wide range of sports, competitive opportunities and enrichment experiences that reflect the role of sport in society.

Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive for all learners, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds, with adaptive teaching and support ensuring all students can access and succeed. We provide multiple ways to achieve across practical, leadership and theoretical aspects of PE while maintaining high expectations for every learner. The National Curriculum is fully covered through a progressive programme across Key Stage 3 and 4, including a range of sports and activities such as invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities, alongside learning about fitness, health and wellbeing.

Students say…

"PE gives me the confidence to challenge myself and try new sports."
"The clubs and fixtures are a great way to improve and represent the school."
"The teachers encourage everyone to get involved, whatever their ability."

The Physical Education department is led by experienced and passionate subject specialists who are committed to delivering a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that inspires students to develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity and sport. Staff possess expertise across a wide range of practical activities and academic qualifications, enabling students to benefit from high-quality teaching at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The department continually engages with professional development to ensure teaching reflects current educational research and examination requirements, while also providing students with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork and independent learning skills.

Teaching combines practical application with theoretical understanding to develop confident, knowledgeable and reflective learners. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning, using direct instruction, modelling, questioning, guided practice and collaborative learning. Students develop practical skills alongside tactical awareness, decision-making and performance analysis, while academic lessons incorporate discussion, case studies and exam-style questions to prepare students for external qualifications.

To ensure students retain and apply their knowledge over time, key concepts are regularly revisited throughout the curriculum using retrieval practice, low-stakes questioning, spaced repetition. Teachers routinely link new learning to previously taught content, enabling students to make meaningful connections across different topics and sporting contexts. Practical skills are revisited across multiple units to strengthen performance and confidence, while theoretical knowledge is reinforced through regular knowledge checks, exam practice, feedback and opportunities for reflection. Students are encouraged to analyse their own and others' performances, applying feedback to improve both practical execution and decision-making.

Physical Education makes a significant contribution to the development of literacy, numeracy and digital competency. Literacy is promoted through the use of subject-specific vocabulary, extended written responses, performance evaluations, research tasks, presentations and structured exam practice. Numeracy skills are developed through analysing performance data, interpreting fitness test results, calculating training zones, applying principles of statistics and measuring performance improvements. Technology is integrated through video analysis, online learning platforms and within written coursework tasks, enabling students to evaluate performance and enhance their learning.

Homework is set once every two weeks across Key Stage 4 to reinforce and extend learning completed in lessons. Tasks are designed to consolidate key knowledge through retrieval practice, revision activities and exam-style questions, helping students to retain information and develop confidence in applying their understanding. Students regularly use the EverLearner online platform to access revision resources, knowledge checks and independent learning activities that support classroom teaching. Dedicated homework time is also allocated to completing and refining coursework where appropriate, ensuring students remain on track with assessment deadlines while developing their independent study skills.

The Physical Education department offers a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme that provides students with opportunities to participate, compete and develop their skills beyond the classroom. Clubs are available throughout the year across a variety of sports, enabling students of all abilities to remain active, improve performance and represent the school in local and regional competitions. Leadership opportunities, such as officiating, coaching and supporting primary school festivals, allow students to develop confidence, responsibility and communication skills while applying the knowledge and skills gained in lessons.

Students also benefit from enrichment activities including fixtures, tournaments, sports tours and visits to professional sporting events and higher education institutions. Where appropriate, external coaches and guest speakers enhance students' understanding of careers within the sport, health and leisure industries, providing valuable insight into future pathways. These experiences broaden students' cultural capital by exposing them to a range of sporting environments, careers and role models, while inspiring participation beyond school.

These opportunities complement and extend the taught curriculum by allowing students to apply practical skills, leadership, teamwork and tactical understanding in authentic sporting contexts. They also reinforce theoretical concepts studied at Key Stages 4 and 5, helping students to deepen their understanding while fostering a lifelong engagement with physical activity and sport.
