Key Stage 4 subject choices evening
Introduction by Phil Jobling and Shaun Smith. This meeting is scheduled to start at 10/02/21 6.00pm and then repeated at 6.20pm. Please click the link in the overview table to join the meetings.
Thanks for joining on the Virtual KS4 evening. We have designed the programme to provide a range of support to allow you as families to make informed decisions about subject choices for years 10 and 11. The design of the programme is intended to create flexibility and can be accessed anytime, anywhere. With the exception of live Q and A sessions all materials will be available beyond the 10th February should you be unable to access some sessions.
All sessions can be accessed via links below and we ask that you join and leave live sessions according to the timings in the grid. This is in an effort to minimise disruption for the speakers and audience. In question and answer sessions the most effective way is put to put your question in the chat function. However should you need to speak please use the hand up function on google meet and you will then be invited to speak. Failing that should you still have queries at the end of the evening please email the relevant member of staff form the list below.
Please also read the FAQ’s which appear at the bottom of the page.

10 FAQs
Question: How many subject choices do we make? Answer: the vast majority of students will make 4 choices. For some students with special educational needs we may advise that 3 is appropriate.
Question: Do I select my subjects from option columns? Answer : No. We aim to give a free choice. However there is one group of subjects we ask that you choose from: Geography, History, Spanish, French, German Separate sciences and Computer science
Question: Can I take any combination of subjects. Answer : Almost, however exam boards and the DFE advise against some combinations because of the similarity of the courses. Therefore we expect that you choose 1 design and technology subject, 1 from Art, Textiles and graphics, PE or Sports Studies and Computer Science or DIT (Digital Information Technology) BTEC, 1 language
Question : Will I get all of my choices? Answer : Very likely. Each year we go back to about 10 students and ask them to take a reserve subject.
Question: What if I have a problem with my choices and disagree with what's on offer? Answer :make your choices on the system but email the school to state what your preferences are to see if there is anything we can do about it.
Question: If I take separate ( triple) science, does it use up one of my choices? Answer : Yes it does. Separate sciences require more curriculum time to get through the courses.
Question: What's the difference between PE GCSE Studies. Answer :PE GCSE is more about performance and physiological theory. Sports Studies as well having practical's is about wider issues in sport such as health, participation and organisation of activities.
Question: What's the difference between Computer Science GCSE and DIT (Digital Information Technology) BTEC. Answer: Computer Science GCSE is learning about how computer systems actually work, which includes the hardware components, software, networks, the internet, considering computing ethical issues and practical programming work. DIT BTEC is about learning how to use specific software and tools to meet certain scenarios, such as designing a User Interface, manipulating and presenting data using spreadsheets and considering how to use software tools such as social media to aid businesses.
Question: Can I take History and Geography? Answer: Yes
Question: When do I fill out my form and return it to school? Answer: You don’t. Choices are made online and the students receive an email first to make the choices and then the parents get an email about a week later to look at the choices and sign them off. The dates are Friday 12th February and Monday 22nd February, and close of play is Friday 26th February.
