Physical Disabilities

Students with a range of physical disabilities are supported on the basis of both  their physical and academic needs within their timetabled lessons.

The focus however is very clearly on inclusion in all main stream lessons, except for their therapeutic programmes.  They will follow their peers in accessing a mainstream curriculum but in addition will have access to physiotherapy and hydrotherapy should they require it. Each student will have a bespoke timetable ensuring all their needs are met.

As these students progress through the school their option choices and timetable will be negotiated with the student, parents and relevant members of the SEND team. This will ensure they receive their full entitlement to all aspects of the school’s curriculum. Every effort is made to support the student’s attendance and active involvement in all school trips and events, which is their entitlement.

The P.D. team are led by a specialist leader and a Lead LSA.  However, all LSAs share in the support of P.D. students including all aspects of their personal care.  Together with the school nurse, care plans completed alongside the parents and students, so at all times there is an excellent level of communication between, school, home and visiting professionals.

The LNC has a wonderful hydrotherapy pool and modern fitness suite / physiotherapy area staffed by a physio technician working to the guidance of our physiotherapist.  Some students in KS3 do “Riding for the Disabled” at Arundel each week, with our staff.  All are encouraged to engage fully with all aspects of extra-curricular activities including:

  • After school cookery club
  • Boccia
  • Multifarious para sports including table cricket

The school boasts national and international para sport students who take their training very seriously, and every year we take a team to the Stock Mandeville Games for three nights and days of non-stop sport!

Additional facilities to the hydro pool and fitness suite include:

  • A hygiene suite with overhead tracking
  • Access to occupational therapy
  • Access to wheelchair services
  • Speech, language and communication support
  • Specialist careers advice including supported visit to colleges and universities, so transition past 16/18 is seamless
