Autism & Social Communication Difficulties

We are not the designated County provider for students with an autistic spectrum condition, Asperger’s Syndrome, or students with difficulties with social communication. However, we do have such students in the school, though they are not in planned places.

Students are taught alongside their peers in mainstream classes with shared support, where appropriate.  The school has a Lead LSA for ASC students and her role is to manage and monitor students and their learning.  All LSAs have experience of working with such students and have received “in-house” training.

There is a designated quiet room for use at lunch and break time and to a limited degree, as a quiet place in times of anxiety or stress during the school day.  Good links are in place with a speech and language therapist who visits, and students have access to the full range of extra-curricular activities and trips, just like their peers.

All colleagues are aware of the diverse nature of students on the Spectrum and are supported in their understanding of each student by the SEND Team, with the Lead LSA in particular working closely with parents to ensure needs and anxieties are understood and managed well, in a school context.
