Extra-Curricular Activities
The school has a strong tradition of extra-curricular activities and the range of clubs, activities, trips and visits is numerous. We know from experience that our students develop their personality and discover their strengths and abilities through joining in activities at lunchtime and after school. This is part of our process of preparing young people for life in the adult world.
We have Sports College status, which helps further develop our strong commitment towards health and physical education for all our students.
Sports
All students have access to a wide programme of sporting activities. Most practices take place during the lunch hour and matches are usually after school. The school takes competition very seriously, asking students always to give their best. We have an excellent record of success both at County and National level. Our annual activities week is an opportunity for Year 7, to access a range of mainly outdoor activities not possible through the normal curriculum.
Performing Arts
Our Arts Policy for the school sets our what we consider to be an entitlement for the students as well as describes our long-term aims for achievement and participation.
The Performing Arts, which includes Drama, Music and Dance, produce many performances and productions during the year.
The curriculum and the school has a reputation of excellence in Drama, Music and Dance. This is promoted through the many clubs run for all three areas of performance.
In music, many students learn a variety of instruments with our visiting teachers, from double bass, drumkit, guitar and saxophone to flute, violin, keyboard and voice. This interest is developed through the many music clubs that take place during the lunch hour and after school. Students have the opportunity to join a variety of choirs, the band, string groups, guitar and keyboard clubs.
In drama, students have the opportunity to perform in both informal and large productions. These are developed through regular clubs for all year groups at lunchtimes and after school. There are often many theatre trips and some workshops.
In dance, students can join several clubs which run at lunchtime or after school and which work towards performance both in school and in the wider community.
Art
Many students spend time in the Art area developing new interests in pottery, photography, silk screen printing, computer graphics and art. Art teachers are present to offer advice and guidance. Students are invited to use the art rooms during lunchtimes. A-Level students are encouraged to attend life drawing sessions.
Trips and Visits
A large number of trips and visits are organised each term to enrich the students' learning. There is a great variety, ranging from local field trips to visits to theatres and art galleries. In addition, we have French and German exchanges. In the past, trips have been made during the holidays to Israel , Florida , Austria and Italy . We also have many visitors who come to work with us and share their experiences.
Bee Keeping
Bee keeping is a popular activity and groups of fledgling and practised apiarists produce some excellent "home grown" honey each year. Expert advice is available from a member of the teaching staff.
