Emotional, Moral and Social Health
All students benefit from an excellent tutor system, supporting individual needs helping every student to be happy, confident members of our community. A comprehensive programme of personal, social, vocational and religious education develop the students into young citizens. The Sports College engages all students in teams through the House Sports System, giving the opportunity for students to benefit socially and emotionally from planning, organising and taking part in sporting events throughout the year. Issues of personal health, sexual health, disease and its prevention are dealt with through science and PSRVE programmes..
Fitness Testing
All students undergo a range of fit tests every year. This starts in primary schools and is continued and developed in the Sports College. These tests look at the full fitness range with the information kept by the students on the fit pages in their planners. This information is used to help direct students into appropriate activities and for them to keep a record of their levels and fitness, with aerobic fitness a good indicator of the levels of regular exercise being taken. Results are used to encourage regular exercise. A data base health and fitness programme is currently being developed.
Exercise in the Curriculum
Alongside fitness being delivered as in integral part of each module, specific fitness and exercise modules are delivered encouraging a positive attitude to exercise. Students are introduced to a range of training methods, by the end of Year 10 all students will have completed induction in the use of the fitness suite and will have planned an appropriate training programme. Students are encouraged to participate in long slow distance activities such as cross country, orienteering, cycling and swimming. With completion of the infamous 5 mile Highdown run upto the triangulation point on Highdown Hill a highlight for many Year 11 students.
Exercise opportunities beyond the curriculum
The schools excellent fitness suite is fully used with sessions run every lunchtime and after school. Recent developments have provided greater training opportunities with an instructor now appointed to develop a wider range of training opportunities and provide individual training plans for all school team players. Additional lunchtime clubs in aerobics, as well as all the other sports clubs provide the opportunity for students to exercise everyday.
Healthy Diet
The school canteen provides an excellent range of healthy
eating options, such as fresh salads, freshly made
baguettes, fruit,
fruit drinks,
yogurt, and hot meals. The healthy options are becoming
an increasingly popular
choice by students.
