The Angmering Allstars Perform Admirably in the Albion Cup 2017

Angmering Allstars participated in the Albion Cup 6-aside football tournament with their combined Year 8, 9, 10, and 11 team. The tournament (organised by Brighton and Hove Albion FC) took place at the Triangle in Burgess Hill.

With our success in the tournament earlier on in the year, the team decided to go into the competition with a positive mindset in an attempt to defend their title.

To stand any chance of making the Quarter Final we first had to get through a tough 5-match group stage. Here is how the team got on in the group stages…

Angmering Allstars 1 Downs Park 2

(B. Harper )

Angmering Allstars 4 Grove Park 0

(B. Pearce (2 goals), H. Phillips, M. Kill)

Angmering Allstars 3 Lindfield 0

(B. Harper, H. Finch, B. Pearce)

Angmering Allstars 1 Saxon Mount 0

(T. Callaghan)

Angmering Allstars 2 Oak Grove 3

(T. Callaghan, M. Kill)

Some fantastic individual and team performances in the group stages meant that we were through to the Quarter Final. We faced very tough opposition in a match that was eventually decided by a single goal…..a sweet strike into the top corner scored by Blake Harper (in the last minute). Angmering were through to face Oak Grove in the Semi- Final!

Having lost 3-2 earlier in the group stages against Oak Grove (having been leading 2-0), Angmering knew they had to be on the top of their game. The match was a very cagey affair with both teams taking control at various times during the match. As the game went on it looked destined to go to a penalty shootout, but with virtually the last kick of the game, Oak Grove’s captain smashed home a brilliant volley.

Although the Angmering Allstars were visibly disappointed, they can be very proud of their efforts and performances throughout the whole tournament. The lads should also be congratulated for their exceptional behaviour and sportsmanship.
